It is a professional depigmentation treatment used to reduce or eliminate dark spots and hyperpigmentation on the skin. It is one of the most effective treatments for addressing melasma, sun spots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation caused by various factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, or post-inflammatory conditions (e.g., acne scars). Cosmelan works by inhibiting the production of melanin in the skin, leading to a more even complexion. It has long-term effects by reprogramming the skin to stop producing hyperpigmentation.
Cosmelan works by regulating the overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots, and breaking down existing pigmentation. It contains a combination of tyrosinase inhibitors, an enzyme involved in melanin production, which helps to suppress melanin synthesis and prevent new spots from forming.
Cosmelan can be used on all skin tones and types, which makes it versatile compared to other depigmentation treatments.
The treatment is performed in two stages. The treatment is performed in two stages: an in-clinic application and an at-home maintenance regimen.
1. In-Clinic Mask (Cosmelan 1):
Cosmelan 1 mask is applied to the patient’s skin.
The mask contains a concentrated formulation of the active ingredients and is left on the skin for a specific duration (usually 6-12 hours), depending on skin type and severity of pigmentation. After the required time, the patient washes off the mask at home.
2. At-Home Maintenance (Cosmelan 2):
After the mask is removed, the patient continues with the at-home maintenance protocol using the Cosmelan 2 cream, which contains lower concentrations of the active ingredients. The at-home treatment is essential to maintain and enhance the depigmentation process and prevent the reoccurrence of dark spots. It typically lasts several months.
Initial Results: Improvements in pigmentation and skin tone are usually noticeable within 1-2 weeks.
Dark spots and discolouration will start to fade, and the skin will appear brighter and more even.
Full Results: After around 4-6 weeks, there is a significant reduction in hyperpigmentation, and the skin appears clearer and more radiant.
Long-Term Results: To maintain results, ongoing maintenance with Cosmelan 2 and proper sun protection is recommended, as hyperpigmentation can recur without proper care.
Redness and Peeling: Following the application of the Cosmelan 1 mask, it’s common to experience redness, peeling, and dryness for several days. This is part of the skin’s renewal process.
Sensitivity: The skin may be more sensitive to sunlight and external factors during and after treatment, making sun protection crucial.
Tightness and Itching: Mild irritation, tightness, or itching may occur, but these side effects typically subside within a week.
Sun Protection: Strict sun avoidance and daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+) are vital to prevent further pigmentation and protect the skin.
Hydration and Soothing: Use gentle, hydrating products to soothe the skin and help with any post-treatment dryness.
Regular Follow-up: It is essential to follow up with your dermatologist to monitor progress and adjust the aftercare routine as needed.
Cosmelan is a highly effective solution for those dealing with persistent pigmentation issues, offering significant and long-lasting improvements with proper maintenance and care.
